Electric scooter safety with Scoot Safe

As electric scooters become a popular mode of transportation, Shepherd Center has observed a concerning rise in electric scooter-related injuries. Alarmingly, 44% of these injuries are classified as brain injuries. In fact, national research indicates that a significant number of electric scooter riders injured in crashes were not wearing helmets. To combat this trend and promote safer riding practices, we’ve partnered with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to launch the Scoot Safe Program.

Why electric scooter safety matters

Electric scooters offer convenience and mobility, but they also come with risks. Understanding the importance of safety can prevent serious injuries. Here are some key statistics highlighting the need for safety measures:

  • Rising injury rates: The number of electric scooter-related injuries has been steadily increasing across the nation.
  • Helmet usage: Research shows that a large percentage of riders involved in accidents were not wearing helmets, significantly increasing their risk of head injuries.
  • Types of injuries: Common injuries include fractures, concussions, and traumatic brain injuries, all of which can have long-lasting effects.

44%

Nearly half of scooter-related injuries are classified as brain injuries.
